Billy Sipe, Jr.
Driver/Owner USAC Western States Midget #42
Being a lifelong race fan, I decided, after law school, to go racing (although I did race motorcycles briefly as a teenager). In 1989, I purchased my first race car, a homebuilt mini-sprint. I raced this car for one year and, thereafter, upgraded to a new Chuck's Chassis mini-sprint. This car was featured in the August 1991 edition of Open Wheel Magazine. I raced this car for three years in the Phoenix area. My best career finish in the mini-sprints was second. I eventually sold this car and decided to try something different.
In 1994, I purchased my first midget from Jerry Coons, Jr., a Stewart car with Fontana power. This was a really good car. I raced with AMRA in Phoenix for one year and, thereafter, began racing with the USAC Western States midgets in California. Racing on the west coast was a lot of fun and very competitive. I have raced against Tony Stewart, Ryan Newman, Jason Leffler, Kasey Kahne, Billy Boat, Jay Drake, J.J. Yeley, and Kenny Irwin, Jr., among others. Many of the USAC Western States races were also televised.
The USAC Western States midgets race on both dirt and pavement. Because my Stewart car was a dirt car only, I purchased a TCR "combo" car powered by Esslinger to race both dirt and pavement. This was a great car and I quickly discovered that I enjoyed pavement racing over racing on dirt. In 2000, I sold the TCR car and purchased a Beast pavement midget from Lewis Racing (this car was formerly driven by Kasey Kahne). Since 2000, I raced exclusively on pavement including the Copper World in Phoenix and Turkey Night at Irwindale. I loved this racecar! It was awesome! However, due to other commitments, I was not racing as much as I wanted to and in 2003, sadly, sold this car. It is now being raced by Garrett Boyden who is doing an outstanding job racing with BCRA and USAC. I did return to my "roots" and purchased a Honda CRF 450 where I will be resurrecting my motorcycle racing career and I am also sponsoring other motocross racers in the community. I do anticipate returning to auto racing in the near future. I will likely be looking towards a truck series. In 2006, I purchased a Dodge race truck and is competing in the West Coast Pro Truck series.
